Botanical Name: Cyperus Scariosus

Description & Extraction  :

Cyperus scariosus is generally known as cypriol and is grown in Madhya Pradesh, India. This plant is also called nagarmotha. Having woody and earthy smell, Cypriol is a prominent constituent of perfumes manufactured in India. The plant attains a height of about 2 1/2 feet, with a thin stem dark green in color. This is a flowering shrub with flowers attaining length from 2 to 8 inches. The nodes are approximately ½ thick in diameter and found in an oval rhizome shape. An aromatic stem the inside of which is white in color. The constituent rhizome contains alkaloids, minerals, sodium, along with sodium, calcium, and carbonates, and which is what generates oil. Rhizome distilled with the help of steam distillation from the roots of plants. Largely found in India, the weed is highly famous across the country. The cyperus scarious is taken as a pest in several countries. Appearing dark brown in color, Cypriol oil can alter its color to a transparent green. With the change in color, the fragrance also becomes woodier. It blends with Clary Sage, Bergamot, Patchouli and Labdanum.

Chemical Components  :

The chief component in the oil are sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpene ketones and sesquiterpene alcohols.

Toxicological Properties

Beelding is a negative side effect of the oil, therefore, pregnant women should avoid this oil.

Uses & Precaution  :

  • Cypriol oil has decongestant properties.

  • The oil is good for curing diarrhea and complex digestive problems. It is also extremely good in mucus, scabies and scanty periods.

  • This is an effective oil to terminate intestinal worms. It can function as a general tonic and nerve binder; it facilitates uterine contractions and can solidify stools if you have an upset stomach.

  • Cypriol oil is good for anorexic as well as problems like intestinal bleeding and non-specific colitis too. This oil is ideal for use in other illnesses like skin diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, fever, and uric acid related illnesses, painful menstruation, kidney stones, general debility, and fibromyalgia.

  • The plant can be applied in paste form on skin related diseases and can provide relief from itching. It also beneficial for improving eyesight. Cypriol oil is also used in incense sticks and perfumes. In powder form, cypriol is used in and epilepsy as well as for maintaining a usual body temperature.
